THE WORLD’S SOFTEST SADDLE HORSE
3.5 Hours
Peru is a multiethnic and multicultural country, with 24% of the population describing themselves as indigenous and 3% as of African descent. Part of the Peruvian culture can be seen in its people, its customs, its dances, its music and its gastronomy. Since prehistoric times, human beings have had the need to communicate bodily, with movements that expressed feelings and moods. These first rhythmic movements were also used to ritualize important events (ceremonies, festivals, weddings). In the beginning, the dance had a ritual component, celebrated in ceremonies of fertility, hunting or war, or of diverse religious nature, where the own breathing and the beats of the heart served to grant a first cadence of the dance.
The Peruvian Paso Horse is one of the smoothest gaits in the world, it is a versatile, athletic, durable horse breed from South America. Bred to cover long distances in a smooth gait. Horses were introduced to Peru during the Spanish conquest. At first, they were used as a way of transportation, for military purposes and to help in field work. They had various functions, but not many people came up with the idea of using them for recreational and artistic purposes. For this, centuries had to pass before the offspring of the Spanish horse -especially the Andalusian horse- adopted that particular gait.
The favorite activity for paso horses is to accompany a dancing couple in the marinera. Although they are most famous in the departments of Lima, La Libertad, Arequipa, Piura and Lambayeque, you can see shows related to paso horses all over Peru. If you see a horse with a compact and muscular body, with elongated limbs, bright eyes that transmit tenderness and have a unique majesty when moving in four strokes, yes, you are indeed in front of the Peruvian Paso horse.
