4 Hours
Lima, the capital of Peru, is a city that boasts a rich colonial heritage. One of the best ways to experience this heritage is through a tour of the colonial houses in the city.
The Historic Center of Lima was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991, it still preserves a set of old buildings that represent a magnificent evidence of the ostentatious progress it enjoyed in past centuries and we can still find some architectural gems that behind their facades preserve hundreds of years of history.
This tour begins with a short walk through the old streets of Lima, this area is also known as «El Damero de Pizarro» (Pizarro’s Checkerboard) , the first visit will be the Fernandini House, built on a 700 square meters lot is considered the most luxurious property of the 1900’s, also a great exponent of Art Nouveau, noted for its beautiful facade covered by mosaics and adorned with scrolls and floral garlands and metal balconies with a modernist artistic trend, built in concrete and brick, has the first elevator installed in the capital city.
Our second place to visit will be the Aliaga House, it is one of the oldest colonial houses in Lima, dating back to the 16th century. It was built by Jerónimo de Aliaga, who was one of Francisco Pizarro’s conquistadors. This fascinating property has passed through 17 generations in the hands of the same family, the descendants of Don Jeronimo de Aliaga y Ramirez, it is the only property in the entire American continent that has been inhabited uninterruptedly for more than 480 years. The land was given to Captain Aliaga by the founder Marquis Francisco Pizarro as a gesture of his friendship, trust and gratitude, inside we find different works in marble, wood, porcelain, paintings, furniture, mirrors, glass, patios, among others. The house is a stunning example of colonial architecture, with its thick adobe walls, wooden balconies, and intricately carved doorways. You will explore the various rooms of the house, including the chapel and the second courtyard.
Then we will go to the Main Square of Lima, we will see the beautiful buildings around it, such as: Basilica Cathedral of Lima, Archbishop’s Palace, Government Palace, Metropolitan Municipality of Lima and the Club de la Union.
